The
Engineering Geological Database for Strong Motion Stations in Taiwan
What is the project?
Central Weather Bureau (CWB) of the R. O. C. has installed more than
650 seismograph stations all over Taiwan to collect ground motion data.
The intense and the frequency content of ground motion is affected by
the source of earthquake, propagation path of stress waves and the site
conditions. Bedrock motion, the motion that occurs at bedrock overlain
by soil deposit, can be predicted by empirical attenuation relationships,
but the surface ground motion is influenced by the soils that lie above
the bedrock. Realizing soil conditions of the station site becomes an
essential task for earthquake engineering.
This project was established by CWB and NCREE in 2000. The central component
of this project is the collection and dissemination of high quality
subsurface data obtained from seismograph station sites. Soil profile
characteristics are determined by subsurface investigation and field/lab
testing program. To date, 125 station sites have been investigated.
Another 51 stations were arranged in 2002, some micro tremor tests were
included. All the results are organized into a GIS web, and the application
will be more convenient.
